An experimental study of particle-driven gravity currents on steep slopes with entrainment of particles

چکیده
Abstract. Results of laboratory experiments are presented in which a finite suspension of sawdust particles was released instantaneously into a rectangular channel immersed in a water tank. Two kinds of gravity currents were studied: currents with or without entrainment of particles from the bed. Experiments were repeated for two slopes: 30 and 45. We observed that the velocity of the front was significantly increased as particle entrainment occurred. In addition, our experiments showed that the front kept a quasi-constant velocity for both runs. This might suggest that the flow regime corresponded to the “slumping regime” or “adjustment phase” described earlier by Huppert and Simpson (1980).

ISPH Numerical Modeling of Nonlinear Wave Run-up on Steep Slopes
Non-breaking tsunami waves run-up on steep slopes can cause severe damages to coastal structures. The estimation of the wave run-up rate caused by tsunami waves are important to understand the performance and safety issues of the breakwater in practice. In this paper, an Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method (ISPH) method was utilized for the 2DV numerical modeling of nonli...
متن کاملOverview of Direct Numerical Simulation of Particle Entrainment in Turbulent Flows
An overview of removal and re-entrainment of particles in turbulent flows is presented. The procedure for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equation via a pseudospectral method for simulating the instantaneous fluid velocity field is described. Particle removal mechanisms in turbulent flows in a duct are examined and effects of the near-wall coherent eddies on the parti...
متن کاملEffects of operating parameters on time-dependent ash entrainment behaviour of a sample coal flotation
It is well-known that entrainment of particles into the froth is a key factor in the selectivity and performance of the flotation process, especially for fine particle recovery. Since flotation is a continuous process, in this work, the effects of operating parameters on the entrainment of ash materials in a sample coal flotation is investigated from a time-sequence viewpoint. The effects of th...
متن کاملHydrodynamics Analysis of Density Currents
Density Current is formed when a fluid with heavier density than the surrounding fluid flows down an inclined bed. These types of flows are common in nature and can be produced by; salinity, temperature inhomogeneities, or suspended particles of silt and clay. Driven by the density difference between inflow and clear water in reservoirs, density current plunges clear water and moves towards a d...
متن کاملOn gravity currents over changing topography
We present experimental results on continuously supplied and well developed gravity currents moving from horizontal to concave or constant-slope boundaries. Results show that the gravity current velocity is in continuous spatial development and approaches an equilibrium state velocity only when the slope change is small. Following closely the theory of Turner (1973) we derive a general equation...
